This presentation will be a brief synopsis using scripture of how many Christian clients view the subject of forgiveness. And why sometimes that view needs to be de-tangled through education regarding the process of multi-level healing. This is a great opportunity to learn more about forgiveness and how God’s charge to us to forgive can be carried out in the process of restoration.

About the location: St. Joe Behavioral Health at 700 Broadway – Medical Office Building, Suite 111: Use the valet service for free (allow extra time) or park in the garage (cost is $1-2). St. Joe Behavioral will provide complimentary coffee, tea, hot chocolate and water. You may bring your own breakfast, but if you would like to purchase breakfast, go directly to the main elevator and down to the ground floor to the cafeteria. Then, get back on elevator and get off at 2nd floor and follow hallway to the right to the Medical Office Building (MOB). Once you cross the enclosed sky bridge, you will now be on the 2nd floor of the MOB. Get on the first elevator to the right and go down to the 1st floor of the MOB. Go to Suite 111 by the fountain. (This is much easier than it sounds.)

Deeper Walk International Conference Highlights

Two weeks ago, a number of FCC members had the opportunity to attend the Deeper Walk International Conference in Indianapolis (formerly International Center for Biblical Counseling). The conference was a delight (as usual) and many of us were challenged in personal and professional ways. New tools and strategies for effective counseling and personal development were provided by a plethora of national and international speakers. We heard outstanding conferences on such topics as:

Brain Science and Dissociation
Discipleship and Addiction Recovery in the Local Church
Foundations of Spiritual Warfare
Freedom in Christ
Discernment--Lessons From Christian History
Forgiving From the Heart
The Healing of Our Heart

I have been fortunate to attend several ICBC conferences in the past (two in Sioux City, Iowa - former headquarters) and I can truly testify to the fact that Indiana is blessed to have such a valuable organization positioned in this state. I hope that next year, many others will be able to avail themselves of the opportunity presented by the Deeper Walk International Conference training.

Deeper Walk Intl Conference in Indianapolis February 28-March 1

The former International Center for Biblical Counseling has recently moved to change its name to Deeper Walk International. It was originally established to operate counseling centers, and three such centers are operating today. The board of ICBC has recently redefined the objectives of the ministry to include an emphasis on Christian discipleship and to focus on provision of materials for use by churches and by lay and professional counselors and on offering training in counseling based on a biblical spiritual warfare worldview and on a clear concept of emotional and spiritual maturity. With these objectives in view, a conference will be held to provide stimulus and training in these areas. The theme will be “Heart-focused Discipleship: Ministering to Wounded Hearts.” The speakers and workshop leaders may not be familiar to you, but they are all well qualified to speak on their topics. Dr. Karl Lehman,MD, for example, is a psychiatrist from Evanston, Illinois, who has done very significant work in integrating Christian faith with therapy. In the past, a number of FCC members have participated in the ICBC (Deeper Walk) conferences which have often been held in Sioux City, Iowa. Dr Timothy Warner will be presenting “Our Journey from the Garden to Glory: Stages in our Journey from Alienation to Intimacy” at our next meeting on August 11th. It will be held at St Joe Medical Center.

The presentation consists of a series of metaphors for our relationship with God beginning with Potter and clay, moving to vine and branches, shepherd and sheep, Savior and beggar/penitent, Master and servant, parent and child, Co-Regent and co-heir with Christ, and finally Heavenly Bridegroom and bride. This will be a presentation of the key truth about each of these metaphors and the lie people are apt to believe that gets them stuck at a lower level than God intends.

We are looking forward to this time and hope to see you there.

We are pleased that Claudia Davis, MSW, LCSW from Providence Counseling Center will be speaking on the topic of The Healer of Broken Hearts: A Discussion of Emotional Healing In the Scriptures. She will be referencing Isaiah 61 in her discussion as she gives us a biblical blueprint for emotional healing. We believe that Claudia has some excellent material to share and we look forward to this time of fellowship and learning. Attendees may want to bring their Bibles.

Faith-Based Advocacy for Social Change Conference

NACSW has an audio conference workshop "Faith-Based Advocacy for Social Change" scheduled on Monday, April 24th from 1-3 EST. It will be delivered by Dr. Jon Singletary, assistant professor of social work at Baylor University. New ABC TV Documentary on Mental Illness

SHADOW VOICES: FINDING HOPE IN MENTAL ILLNESS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Stigma, recovery and hope: San Diego minister in mental illness documentary on ABC-TV

HARRISONBURG, VA. (Mennonite Media) – Susan Gregg-Schroeder of San Diego, an ordained United Methodist minister, will appear in a documentary, Shadow Voices: Finding Hope in Mental Illness airing Dec. 4 through Feb. 4 at the discretion of local ABC stations (check listings at www.shadowvoices.com).

Gregg-Schroeder founded an organization called Mental Health Ministries which operates in conjunction with the California Pacific Conference of the United Methodist Church. She educates people in faith communities on mental health issues.

Rosalynn Carter, former first lady of the U.S. and longtime advocate on mental illness issues, and Dr. David Satcher, former surgeon general of the U.S., headline the program which includes: a brief historical look at the treatment of mental illness in this country; the stigma and isolation still experienced today; the use of prisons as defacto mental institutions; health insurance issues; today’s focus on recovery and rehabilitation, and responses of faith communities.

Gregg-Schroeder, who kept her depression secret for two years, eventually broke silence and says, “If you look out on a congregation on a Sunday morning, one in four families has a member struggling with a mental illness. That is something unfortunately that most of our churches do not address. Many of our parishioners are struggling in silence.”

Persons talking about their journeys with mental illness in addition to Gregg-Schroeder include:

Lyn Legere, who at one time self-medicated on heroin and alcohol, has lived for almost 50 years with mental illness. She recently earned her master’s degree at Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences of Boston University, and also works as a consultant on new Medicare prescription drug program.

Jerome Lawrence, Atlanta, Ga., struggles with schizophrenia, but through medication and hard work functions independently. He creates watercolor paintings and works for a mental health advocacy organization.

Kari Broadway, Rock Valley, Iowa, is studying in a pre-med program and receives regular treatment for depression, hoping that this time she won’t have to drop out of school because of illness.

Ramiro (Ray) Guevara, formerly head of the “In Our Own Voice” program for National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) which encourages persons with mental illness to speak out and tell their stories, notes in the program, “Sharing my story almost normalized it. After awhile I said, ‘I don’t have a problem with having a mental illness. If you have a problem with that, I’m sorry, but I’m okay.’”

Additional experts in the documentary working in the field of mental health or advocacy include:

· Dr. Joyce Burland, Arlington, Va., director of educational programs for NAMI.
· Dr. Erik Roskes, Baltimore, Md., a psychiatrist specializing in working with prison systems and police officers on mental illness.
· Dr. Thomas Bornemann, director of the mental health program at the Carter Center in Atlanta.
· Evelyn Bussema, manager of the Intensive Psychiatric Rehabilitation program for Hope Haven, Rock Valley, Iowa.

Burton Buller, producer for the program and director of Mennonite Media says, “We want to challenge society to rethink the stigma that continues to follow diseases of the brain. We want the viewer to come away from the documentary saying, ‘I will never be able to look at or think about mental illness in the same way again.’”

The program was produced for the “Vision and Values” series for ABC-TV by Mennonite Media in partnership with the Interfaith Broadcasting Commission and the Communications Commission of National Council of Churches. For more information visit www.ShadowVoices.com

Husband-and-Wife Team to Lead Annual Day of Healing

Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott will be the keynote speakers at the 13th annual Day of Healing: A Personal Growth Conference, October 29, at the Honeywell Center, 275 W. Market St., Wabash, Ind.

The Parrotts will be joined by 20 professional counselors and educators at the one-day conference hosted each autumn by the Wabash Friends Counseling Center.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Healthy People, Strong Marriages, Smart Parenting, and Intelligent Leaders.”

The Parrotts speak to over one million people annually in more than 40 cities nationwide and internationally at church conferences, in Fortune 500 corporate seminars, and on college campuses.

Les and Leslie are the authors of the best-selling book Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts, winner of the Gold-Medallion Award. They have also authored Love Talk, Becoming Soul Mates, The Control Freak, I Love You More, Relationships, Questions Couples Ask, Shoulda Woulda Coulda, and High-Maintenance Relationships.

The Parrotts have been guests on CNN, Good Morning America, CBS This Morning, The View with Barbara Walters, NBC Nightly News, and Oprah. A Downtown Festival is also being planned in conjunction with downtown Wabash merchants. The Downtown Festival will provide live entertainment, dining, shopping, and recreation for conferees over an extended lunch hour during the conference.

The Day of Healing has been approved by the National Board for Certified Counselors for 5.0 continuing education hours.

The registration fee is $15 through October 1 and $25 thereafter.

NACSW encourages interaction and support among regional and local groups. The Indiana chapter of NACSW has been holding conferences the last few years with limited interest. This survey is provided so that we can better meet the needs of members. We hope to plan a conference that would accommodate the greatest number of people. We would appreciate your input concerning a state conference in the spring 2006.

The horrors of Katrina are breaking many hearts and minds. The suffering of those who are living in New Orleans and the Gulf regions is unimaginable for most of us. And there is so much to do and so much uncertainty...

Yesterday, I spoke with a coworker, a fellow counselor, whose family members (an aunt and 2 cousins) are still missing. My own brother lives a few miles from Mobile Alabama. He was one of the fortunate. His house was spared. He told me that he could not talk long last night..he and others were going out to purchase supplies to take to the displaced people in the area today. Mobile is about 2 hours away from New Orleans.

I, myself, listen to the current news and wonder what little I can contribute to ease the suffering of the people in that area.

Many news reports are requesting that donations be made in cash (check or credit card) rather than through the giving of tangible goods since there is no infrastructure in place at this time.

As Christians, please consider sacrificial giving for what is going to be the greatest relief effort in US history. What we do now, and how we respond to the suffering of our fellow Americans will significantly impact the spiritual climate of this nation.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Presentation

On Friday, August 12, 8 - 9 am, (with fellowship and coffee beginning at 7:30am), Gret Machlan, LCSW will present: "Dialectical Behavior Therapy: A Christian Perspective." DBT is a well researched model of treatment for those with severe problems with emotion regulation. Primarily, it has been shown to be effective for those with Borderline Personality Disorder. Park Center has been providing DBT for 7 years, and as a result has found great success in reducing hospital admissions, length of stay, and many clients have made significant improvements in quality of life.

Park Center is located at 909 E. State Blvd. Once you enter the campus, veer to the left and drive toward the back of the property--the gym is on the left. The parking and entrance for the Gym Conference Room is at the north end of the gym (behind the gym) -- follow the signs. If you need further directions, please call 481-2700. Judy King co-authored Released from Bondage with Dr. Neil Anderson and Dr. Fernando Garzon. She is a psychotherapist from Grand Rapids, and her vibrant Christian faith has led to integration of spiritual interventions into her conventional psychotherapy practices.

Dr. Stephen King is a psychiatrist who has always had a passion to integrate Christian truths and medical knowledge in the journey to personal wholeness. Dr. King is also a board member of Freedom in Christ International.

Fellowship of Christian Counselors Statement of Faith:

There exists only one God, creator and sustainer of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally co-existing in three persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

The Scriptures, both Old and New testaments, are the inspired, inerrant and trustworthy Word of God, the complete revelation of His will for the salvation of human beings, and the final authority for all matters about which it speaks.

Human nature derives from two historical personas, male and female, created in God's image. They were created perfect, but they sinned, plunging themselves and all human beings into sin, guilt, suffering, and death.

The substitutionary death of Jesus Christ and his bodily resurrection provide the only ground for justification, forgiveness, and salvation for all who believe. Only those who trust in Him alone are born of the Holy Spirit and are true members of the Church; only they will spend eternity with Christ.

The Holy Spirit is the agent of regeneration and renewal for believers in Jesus Christ. He makes the presence of Jesus Christ real in believers, and he comforts, guides, convicts, and enables believers to live in ways that honor Christ.

Ministry to personas acknowledges the complexity of humans as physical, psychological, social, and spiritual beings. The ultimate goal of Christian counseling is to help others move to personal wholeness, interpersonal competence, mental stability, and spiritual maturity.
